Sudden Unexplained Infant Death Investigation Form (SUIDI)
Sudden unexpected infant deaths are defined as death in infants less than 1 years of age that occur suddenly and unexpectedly and whose cause of death are not immediately obvious prior to investigation.
Each year in Oklahoma, more than 400 infants die before their first birthday. In Central Oklahoma that means there are approximately two deaths every week. One in five (20%) of those deaths occur suddenly with no obvious cause. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death for infant's age one month through one year. The diagnosis of SIDS can only be made after a thorough examination of the death scene, a complete autopsy and a review of the infant's medical history.
"While the cause of SIDS is unknown, far too often what has historically been ruled a SIDS case is actually a case of unsafe sleeping conditions or other such causes," states Kelli McNeal, FIMR Supervisor. Through law enforcement's help in documenting information on the Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Investigation (SUIDI) form we will have a more precise and reliable reporting of the cause and manner of death in infants. Accurate information leads us to a better understanding and hopefully better solutions to reduce infant mortality.â€
