Updated Recommendations for use of Tdap Vaccine
- New Tdap Requirement – Students Entering 7th Grade
Beginning with the 2011-12 school year, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis) vaccine will be required for students in the 7th grade in Oklahoma schools.
Tdap is a booster dose of tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccines. One dose of Tdap is routinely recommended at 11 through 12 years of age. One dose is also recommended for adolescents 13 through 18 years of age who have not already received a dose.
No minimum interval is required between giving doses of Td and Tdap to adolescents and adults who are, or expect to be, in frequent contact with children less than one year old. This includes adolescents who are older siblings of infants, babysitters, hospital volunteers, etc. In these circumstances, give Tdap without delay to provide indirect protection to infants.
Adults Aged 65 years and Older
Those who have or anticipate having close contact with an infant aged less than 12 months should receive a single dose of Tdap. Other adults ages 65 years and older may be given a single dose of Tdap.
