The School Health Index is a self-assessment and planning guide for schools developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The School Health Index helps schools:
- Identify the strengths and weaknesses of your school’s health and safety policies and programs
- Develop an action plan for improving student health
- Involve teachers, parents, students, and the community in improving school policies and programs
The School Health Index is divided into 8 modules to help schools assess different areas of school health and safety. These include health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, counseling, psychological, and social services, healthy school environment, health promotion for staff, and parent/community involvement. These modules are completed by a diverse team of representatives from the school, such as the school’s Healthy and Fit Committee.
Community Health Promotion staff are available to provide trainings on using the School Health Index as well as serve on committees as facilitators.
If you have questions regarding the School Health Index, please call Community Health Promotion at the Oklahoma City-County Health Department at (405) 419-4247 or send us an email at shi@occhd.org.
