If your New Year’s Resolutions include a commitment to improve your health or to lose weight, Wellness Now and OCCHD can help.
OCCHD and Wellness Now are offering free Total Wellness classes beginning in January. The classes are designed to help people change their exercise and eating habits so that they lose weight and keep the pounds off – and the approach has a proven track record.
Participants will learn the basics of good nutrition and the importance of physical activity and discover the key steps for successful weight control, including:
- A method to make easy healthy meals without measuring out portions or following special recipes
- How to control blood sugar and reduce appetite by eating balanced meals
- Why physical activity is so important and ways of motivating yourself to make active choices
- How to take charge of what you eat when dining out
- How to react to lifestyle changes and slips
- Tips for enlisting support from family and friends
“Research suggests that people are more successful at losing weight when they participate in group activities that support their goals,” says Total Wellness coordinator Jennifer Nettle. “We’ve seen from previous sessions that participants not only lose weight, their blood pressure and triglycerides also improve,” Nettle says. And those factors are important in preventing heart disease and other chronic health problems.
Classes will meet for one hour each week for 12 weeks. This year, Total Wellness is offering smaller classes with a limit of 25 participants in each and pre-registration is required.
