As the
state’s leading cause of death, smoking kills more people than alcohol,
illegal drugs, car accidents, suicide, homicide, and AIDS combined!
Tobacco use in Oklahoma is a very costly
problem, both in human and socioeconomic terms. It leads to the
premature death of almost 6,000 Oklahomans every year. The price tag
exceeds $2 billion each year in this state, an average of more than $600
for every Oklahoman.
The
mission of Central Oklahoma Turning Point Tobacco Use Prevention
Committee is to empower and educate citizens and support policy
change to ensure a tobacco free environment.
Central Oklahoma Turning Point Tobacco Use Prevention Committee
is made up of individuals from all walks of life throughout Oklahoma
County. Community efforts include working with groups such as schools,
local organizations, businesses, healthcare agencies, and concerned
citizens to:
-
Raise awareness of the dangers of tobacco use and
secondhand smoke exposure
-
To expose the deceptive marketing tactics of the tobacco
industry
-
Change policy at the local and state level to help
make Oklahoma County a healthier place to live
